Huh..Black Butterfly?

Hello everyone!  I’m here today with Papertrey Ink’s Make It Monday #170: Masking with Die Cuts.

How cool is this effect! What you have to do is cut masks out of dies that have matching stamps. You create an easy one-layer card that will be striking.

Have you ever seen a black butterfly?  They are just as pretty as the colorful ones.

So for those of you who know me, knows that I’m going to draw for my beautiful butterfly stamp and die set.  I have to say this is my favorite set.  It works with everything.

Take a look at my card:

Happy Butterfly

Here are the steps to creating this beautiful one layer card.

1. I cut my butterfly out using my Papertrey Ink’s Life is Beautiful die and some Inkadinkado masking paper.

2. I place the masked butterfly down on my cardstock where I wanted it to be.

3. I sponged Stampin’ Up! Daffodil Delight, Mellon Mambo, and Pumpkin Pie Classic Stampin’ Pad with sponge daubers.

4. I removed the masking to reveal the colorless butterfly surrounded by the beautiful background.

5. I stamp the butterfly detail in Versafine Onyx Black Ink using Papertrey Ink’s Life is Beautiful stamp set.

6. Then I stamped the sentiment using Papertrey Ink’s Wet Paint stamp set using the Versafine Onyx Black Ink.

I decided to use the black ink for my butterfly and sentiment so that they will really pop out of the colorful background.

    • Hey Marcia!!! Thank you so much for your kind words. I have to admit it was hard to add the black because I was afraid to add the black for fear of messing up the beautiful background. I set that fear aside and just did it! I’m so glad I did!

    • Hey Sarah!! Thank you so much for your kind words. Yayyy! You will not be disappointed at all. That set is the best set ever! Have fun and I can’t wait to see what you create!

  1. Love your black and white butterfly! Perfect against the colourful background 😉 and thanks so much for commenting on my water coloured violet!!

    • Hey Kathryn! Thank you so much for stopping by and leaving such a kind comment. I have to admit I was a little afraid of messing up the background if the black didn’t look good. It all worked out though.

  2. Kymona, this is so beautiful! I have never seen a black butterfly in person, but I can imagine they are beautiful! You are making such lovely cards with your PTI butterflies…just grogeous!

  3. This is fantastic. It is exactly the idea I had, only when I tried it, it looked like a squishy mess, and I had to throw it away. So sad. I think my mistake was using ink spritzed with water. Yours is so much better looking, and the sponging gives better definition to the butterfly. Yours looks like I wanted mine to look. Yay you!

    • Thank you so much Joyce for your kind words. I didn’t use water at all. The water would smear the image and it would be as crisp. Try sponging and then stamping. You will like the results better.

  4. Wow, wow, wow!! I just love this, its exceptional. The blending of colours is beautiful and I really like the black, it makes the shape of the butterfly stand out even more. Brilliant design and I really must get my hands on this butterfly die!!
